EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the Kawasaki Ki-100-I-Otsu, with RAF maintenance serial number 8476M, stands proudly on the tarmac of RAF Ternhill during the September 1965 Battle of Britain air display. This Japanese fighter aircraft, a sole surviving example in the United Kingdom, is an intriguing reminder of the Second World War's global conflict. The Kawasaki Ki-100-I-Otsu, also known as the "Hien" or "Swallow" in Japanese, was a late-war development of the successful Kawasaki Ki-61 "Tony" series. Powered by a liquid-cooled Ha.201A engine, this agile and well-armed fighter was a formidable opponent for Allied forces. Its distinctive inverted gull-wing design and sleek lines made it a striking sight in the skies. By September 1965, this Ki-100-I-Otsu had been preserved as a valuable historical artifact. The RAF, which had played a crucial role in the Battle of Britain during the war, invited it to participate in the commemorative air display. The aircraft's presence served as a poignant reminder of the aerial battles that had taken place over British skies just two decades earlier. Today, this rare and historic aircraft can be admired at the Aerospace Museum Cosford. It is a testament to the aeronautical achievements of the past and a reminder of the importance of preserving aviation history for future generations. The photograph captures a moment in time when the past and present intersected, allowing us to appreciate the evolution of flight and the enduring legacy of the brave men and women who have shaped the skies.
