This image depicts the historic moment of Otto I's coronation as Holy Roman Emperor in Rome, Italy, in February 962. Otto, a Saxon duke, had been chosen by Pope John XII to succeed the deceased Emperor Louis II. The ceremony took place in St. Peter's Basilica, with Otto's wife, Adelaide, standing proudly by his side. Adelaide, the daughter of King Rudolf II of Burgundy, was an important political figure in her own right. Her presence at the coronation symbolized the unity of the German and Burgundian realms under Otto's rule.
