EDITORS COMMENTS
Salmon Fishing at Mudeford, Christchurch, Hampshire, England: A Glimpse into the Past This evocative postcard image captures the essence of traditional salmon fishing at Mudeford Quay, Christchurch, Hampshire, England, in the early 1900s. The oldest buildings on the quay, now known as the Dutch Cottages, were erected around 1687, along with an adjoining quay. Their distinctive, timber-framed structure has stood the test of time, bearing witness to centuries of local history. In this scene, a determined fisherman casts his net into the River Avon, hoping to catch a prized salmon. The quayside, with its worn cobblestones and weathered wooden planks, is a testament to the enduring connection between the people of Mudeford and the sea. The Dutch Cottages, with their thatched roofs and whitewashed walls, form a picturesque backdrop to the fishing activity. Sadly, by 2012, the last remaining netsmen had ceased their ancient netting rights, exchanging them for a financial compensation package. This marked the end of an era, as the salmon were allowed to swim freely up the River Avon and River Stour to their spawning grounds. The netting rights, which dated back to the 17th century, had been a significant part of the local fishing tradition. This postcard, from the Mary Evans / Grenville Collins Postcard Collection, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the rich history and traditions of salmon fishing at Mudeford Quay.
