EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithography print depicts Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy (1396-1467), a prominent figure in European history during the 15th century. Known for his wisdom, justice, and generosity, Philip earned the moniker "the Good." In this image, he is shown wearing the regal robes of a chapter member, adorned with the prestigious Golden Fleece Order's gold collar around his neck. Established by Philip in 1429, the Order of the Golden Fleece was a renowned chivalric order that symbolized the unity and power of the Burgundian State. The order's insignia, a golden fleece pendant suspended from a black velvet collar, was a symbol of distinction and honor. The collar was only bestowed upon the most noble and trusted members of the court. Philip's attire in the print includes a richly decorated suit, a tall hat, and a pendant attached to the collar of the Order. The intricate details of the clothing and the regal aura of the Duke underscore the grandeur and importance of the Burgundian State during the Valois-Burgundian period. This print is taken from the book "Historia de las Ordenes de Caballeria y de las Condecoraciones Espanolas" (History of the Orders of Chivalry and the Spanish Decorations), published in Madrid in 1865. The image offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the European monarchy during the modern period and the significance of the Order of the Golden Fleece in the annals of European history.
