EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a Carthaginian soldier, as rendered in an engraving by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, better known as Francisco de Goya, under the name of Jose Cadalso y Solis. The engraving, titled 'Carthaginian Soldier,' was originally created in the 19th century and is now housed at the Museo Militar in Madrid, Spain. The Carthaginian Empire, which flourished in the Mediterranean region from the 9th to the 1st centuries BC, was a formidable civilization that challenged the Roman Republic for dominance in the western Mediterranean. This soldier, dressed in his full battle regalia, embodies the strength and determination of the Carthaginian military. The soldier wears a distinctive helmet, adorned with a crest of feathers and a protective pad on the crown. He holds a large, curved shield, which would have provided ample protection against enemy attacks. In his right hand, he wields a lance, a long spear that could be used for both thrusting and throwing. The soldier's attire also includes a padded tunic, which would have offered additional protection against the blows of enemy weapons. The intricate detail of the engraving allows us to appreciate the various textures and materials used in the soldier's armor, from the smooth metal of his helmet to the rough, woven fabric of his tunic. The background of the print features a Carthaginian ship sailing on the Northwest African coast, a testament to the Carthaginian Empire's maritime prowess. The age and antiquity of this engraving, combined with the later coloration, transport us back to a time when the Mediterranean Sea was a battleground for two great civilizations: Carthage and Rome. This print is a valuable reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of the Carthaginian civilization, which continues to fascinate scholars and enthusiasts of ancient history.
