EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the regal presence of Philip I, also known as Felipe el Hermoso or Philip the Handsome, who ruled as King of Spain from 1494 to 1506. Born in 1478 as the 30th Archduke of Austria from the powerful Hapsburg dynasty, Philip was known for his handsome features, which are beautifully rendered in this image. At the time of this portrait, Philip was in his late twenties, having married Joan of Castile in 1496, thereby uniting the crowns of Spain and the Austrian Netherlands. The greyhound at Philip's feet symbolizes his love for hunting and the noble pursuit of chivalry. Philip's reign was marked by significant events in Spanish history, including the completion of the Alhambra Palace in Granada and the establishment of the Casa de Contratación, the Spanish Council for the Indies, which oversaw the exploration and colonization of the New World. Despite his impressive accomplishments, Philip's reign was also marred by political instability and conflict, including the Revolt of the Comuneros in Castile and the War of the League of Cambrai against France. Ultimately, Philip died in 1506, leaving behind a complex legacy that would shape Spain's future for centuries to come. This image offers a glimpse into the life of a powerful and intriguing monarch, whose reign marked a pivotal moment in the history of Spain and Europe.
