EDITORS COMMENTS
Amidst jubilant crowds and the sound of shattering glass, Americans rejoiced on December 5, 1933, as the 18th Amendment, which had ushered in Prohibition a decade and a half prior, was officially repealed. The end of Prohibition was a cause for celebration across the United States, marking a significant turning point in American history. The repeal of Prohibition brought an end to the era of secret speakeasies, hidden flasks, and clandestine drinking dens. Instead, Americans were now free to openly purchase, consume, and enjoy alcohol once again. The scene depicted in this photograph captures the spirit of the moment, with people of all ages and walks of life coming together to raise a glass in celebration. The end of Prohibition was not only a victory for those who had long advocated for the repeal of the 18th Amendment, but also for the temperance movement, which had originally sought to reduce the consumption of alcohol in the United States. The movement had achieved its goal of bringing attention to the issue of alcoholism, and with the repeal of Prohibition, it paved the way for a more nuanced and informed approach to alcohol consumption. The 1930s, known as the Roaring Twenties, came to be characterized by a newfound appreciation for the finer things in life, including jazz music, dance, and, of course, alcohol. This photograph serves as a reminder of a pivotal moment in American history, when the country collectively let out a sigh of relief and embraced the end of Prohibition with open arms.
