EDITORS COMMENTS
This wood engraving is an exquisite representation of Willem Ysbrantsz Bontekoe's illustration of the dodo (Raphus cucullatus), created in 1646 during his voyage to the East Indies. The image is taken from Hugh Edwin Strickland and Alexander Gordon Melville's comprehensive work, "The Dodo and its Kindred," published in London in 1848. Bontekoe's illustration is a hand-colored lithograph, showcasing the dodo's distinctive features - its large, round body, small wings, and a distinctively shaped head with a red beak and a bare, red skin around the eyes. The dodo's ineptness is also depicted, as it stands with its legs wide apart and its wings spread out, unable to fly. The dodo, a native of the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, is now extinct, having been hunted to extinction by humans shortly after their arrival on the island in the late 1500s. Bontekoe's illustration is an invaluable record of this unique and fascinating bird, which has captured the imagination of ornithologists, naturalists, and the public alike. Strickland and Melville's publication of Bontekoe's illustration in "The Dodo and its Kindred" was a significant contribution to the scientific community, as it helped to document and preserve the memory of this extinct species. The intricately detailed wood engraving is a testament to the skill and artistry of Bontekoe and the dedication of Strickland and Melville to the study and preservation of natural history.
