Valerian, Valeriana dioica, also known as common valerian or Valeriane dioique, is depicted in this stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was engraved by Massard and drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Valerian is a flowering plant in the Caprifoliaceae family, native to Europe and Asia. The plant is characterized by its tall spikes of small, sweet-smelling white or pink flowers. Valerian was historically used for medicinal purposes, particularly for its calming effects on the nervous system. The illustration also features several marine species in the background, including goose barnacles (Alepas spp.), pentalepas (Pentalepas spp.), and various barnacle species such as pollicipes, litholepas, ginnolepade, di, cuvier, cranch, and pentalepade. The presence of these marine species may reflect the historical connection between valerian and the seashore, as the plant is often found in coastal areas. Turpin is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and beautiful use of color.
