EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate print showcases the Tub Gurnard, also known as the Sapphire Gurnard or Trigla hirundo, a fascinating marine fish species belonging to the family Chelidonichthydidae. The Tub Gurnard, Chelidonichthys lucerna, is a common inhabitant of the North Atlantic and Mediterranean seas. The intricately detailed illustration, drawn and engraved by the renowned Irish naturalist Edward Donovan, is taken from his seminal work, "A Natural History of British Fishes," published between 1802 and 1808 by Donovan and F.C. and J. Rivington in London. Donovan's meticulous observations and illustrations were groundbreaking in the fields of ichthyology and zoology, contributing significantly to the scientific understanding of marine life during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The Tub Gurnard is easily recognizable by its unique features, including its elongated snout, large pectoral fins, and distinctive tubercles along its body. These tubercles, which give the fish its common name, are thought to provide protection against predators. The fish is also adorned with striking blue and gold markings, which add to its allure. The Tub Gurnard is an important species in the marine ecosystem, serving as both a predator and prey. It feeds on various invertebrates and smaller fish, while larger species, such as cod and pollock, prey upon it. The fish is also of interest to recreational and commercial fishermen, making this illustration an essential addition to any collection focused on marine life, natural history, or the history of science.
