EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Flavius Julius Valerius Majorianus, better known as Emperor Majorian, the last effective ruler of the Western Roman Empire before its fall in the late 5th century AD. Majorian's reign, which lasted from 457 to 461, was marked by military campaigns against the Vandals, Huns, and other invading forces. He was also known for his efforts to reform the administration and economy of the empire. The portrait, created as a copperplate engraving in the late 17th century by Abraham Bogaerts for the publication "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy) by Francois Salma in Utrecht, Netherlands, provides a striking visual representation of Majorian's regal presence. The emperor is shown wearing a diadem, a symbol of imperial power, and a cloak fastened with a brooch. He gazes intently out at the viewer, his expression conveying a sense of determination and resolve. Majorian's portrait is surrounded by images of other Roman emperors, including Libius Severus, Flavius Serapion, and Flavius Augustus III. These portraits, along with the accompanying text, were likely intended to showcase the continuity and grandeur of the Roman imperial tradition. The use of copperplate engraving, a technique that allowed for high-quality, detailed reproductions, further enhances the visual impact of the portrait. The intricately rendered details, from Majorian's facial features to the folds of his cloak, demonstrate the skill and artistry of Bogaerts and the importance of the Roman imperial legacy in the 17th century.
