EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Poison Bulb, Crinum asiaticum, also known as the Giant Crinum Lily or Spider Lily. The image is based on a botanical illustration by David Blair, which was published in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's Medicinal Plants, a comprehensive work on the medicinal properties of plants, published in London in 1880. The Poison Bulb, Crinum asiaticum, is a large and striking plant native to South Asia and Australia. The bulb, from which the plant derives its name, is indeed poisonous, containing calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation and swelling if ingested or come into contact with the skin. However, the plant's beauty is not to be underestimated. The large, white, funnel-shaped flowers, which can grow up to 30 cm in diameter, bloom in the summer and are often compared to the shape of a spider's web, giving the plant its common name of Spider Lily. Despite the potential danger posed by the bulb, the Poison Bulb, Crinum asiaticum, has been used in traditional herbal medicine for various ailments, including as a treatment for dysentery and as a remedy for snakebites. The plant's rhizomes have also been used to make a starch, which was once used as a food source in some parts of its native range. This exquisite handcoloured lithograph, produced by Hanhart, provides a detailed and accurate record of this fascinating plant, capturing its beauty and intrigue in intricate detail. The use of handcolouring adds an extra layer of depth and richness to the image, making it a true work of art as well as a valuable botanical record.
