This handcoloured woodcut engraving, taken from The Book of English Trades and Library of the Useful Arts published in Tabart, London in 1810, depicts a skilled plumber at work on a building site. The plumber is shown wearing an apron and holding a ladle as he heats lead in a fire to mould it for repairing or replacing lead pipes. The lead, which is melted in the fire, will be used to mend leaks in pipes, such as those connected to sinks or gutters in the house. The plumber's occupation was an essential one during this period, as lead pipes were commonly used for water supply and drainage systems.
