EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured steel engraving depicts the peanut or groundnut, scientifically known as Arachis hypogaea, in exquisite detail. The illustration, created by Edouard Maubert and engraved by Debray, was originally published as part of the comprehensive botanical work "La Regne Vegetal: Planets Agricoles et Forestieres" by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs, published by L. Guerin in Paris between 1864 and 1871. Peanuts, also known as goobers, monkey nuts, or arachides, are native to South America and were first domesticated by the Guarani people in Brazil around 3000 BC. The plant is a herbaceous annual that grows up to one meter tall and bears edible seeds enclosed in a protective pod. The peanut plant is unique in that it grows its fruit, or peanuts, underground. The intricately detailed illustration showcases the various parts of the peanut plant, including the leaves, flowers, pods, and seeds. The vibrant handcolours add depth and dimension to the engraving, making it a beautiful addition to any botanical collection. This engraving is a testament to the meticulous work of the botanical illustrators and engravers of the 19th century, who dedicated themselves to documenting the natural world with exceptional accuracy and artistry. It is a reminder of the rich history of botanical exploration and the importance of preserving and celebrating the diversity of the plant kingdom.
