This poignant photograph captures the Memorial to Two French Resistance Members, located on Hill 60 in the Ypres Salient, Belgium. The image was taken in the year 2016, but the history it commemorates reaches back to the dark days of World War II. The memorial stands as a testament to the bravery and resilience of the French Resistance, who fought valiantly against the German occupation of their country during the war. The two unnamed figures memorialized here were reportedly shot by the Nazis in 1944, their bodies discovered on the very spot where the memorial now stands. Hill 60, also known as Mount Sorrel, holds a significant place in the history of both World War I and World War II. During World War I, it was the site of intense fighting between the Allied and German forces, particularly during the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. The hill changed hands several times before the Allies finally gained control, at great cost. During World War II, Hill 60 became a strategic location once again, this time for the French Resistance.
