EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured lithograph depicts Marie de Berry, Comtesse de Clermont et d'Auvergne, also known as Mary of Berry (1365-1434). She was the wife of Jean I, Duke of Bourbon, Duc de Bourbon, in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. The image is based on an armorial of Auvergne from Roger de Gaignières portfolio VI 19, as published in Le Bibliophile Jacob's Costumes Historiques de la France in 1852. Marie de Berry was a significant figure in the French court during the reign of King Charles VI and the early years of King Louis XI. She was the daughter of Jean I, Count of Berry, and Jeanne de Bourbon, and was known for her beauty, intelligence, and patronage of the arts. In this portrait, Marie is depicted wearing the robes and headdress of a countess, adorned with the fleur-de-lis and other symbols of the French monarchy. Her dress is richly embroidered with gold and pearls, and her headdress is topped with a tall, conical hat known as a hennin, which was a popular fashion among the French nobility at the time. The intricate detail and vibrant colors of this lithograph are a testament to the skill of the artist, Leopold Massard, and the high-quality production techniques of Le Bibliophile Jacob. This image offers a glimpse into the opulence and elegance of the French court during the late Middle Ages, and serves as a reminder of the enduring allure of historical costume and artistry.
