EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handfinished chromolithograph depicts a beautiful array of Mallow or Malva species, showcasing the Garden Mallow (Althaea rosea), Mr. Munro's Malva (Malva munroana), Narrow-leaved Mallow (Malva angustifolia), and possibly the Rose Mallow (Malva rosa) and Althaea officinalis. The illustration is taken from Mrs. Jane Loudon's "Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849 by William S. Orr. Mallows are herbaceous plants in the Malvaceae family, known for their velvety, rounded leaves and showy, funnel-shaped flowers. The Garden Mallow, with its pink, rose-like blooms, is a popular ornamental plant, while the Narrow-leaved Mallow is native to Europe and Asia and is valued for its medicinal properties. Mr. Munro's Malva, also known as the Common or Red Mallow, is a hardy perennial with pink to red flowers and is often grown for its attractive foliage as well as its flowers. The illustration was produced by the renowned botanical artist Jane Loudon and expertly handfinished by Henry Noel Humphreys, a master chromolithographer. Chromolithography is a complex printing process that involves the use of multiple lithographic stones, each coated with a different color, to create a vivid and detailed image. This technique allowed for the mass production of high-quality, affordable prints, making botanical illustrations accessible to a wider audience during the Victorian era. This print not only serves as a beautiful addition to any garden-themed decor, but also as a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the Victorian era. The intricate details of the Mallow species, captured through the collaboration of Loudon's illustration and Humphreys' masterful chromolithography, invite us to appreciate the natural world and the artistry of the past.
