In this evocative image from 1686, Governor Edmund Andros of the Dominion of New England stands resolutely in a bustling Boston street, flanked by his manservant. The scene is filled with a palpable tension as nearby Bostonian men whisper to each other, their expressions wary and disapproving. One man, a weaver, leans out of his doorway and shakes his fist in anger at the governor. Andros' appointment as governor in 1686 marked a significant turning point in the history of New England. The Dominion of New England was established by King Charles II of England to bring the New England colonies under a single, centralized government. Andros' arrival in Boston was met with resistance from the colonists, who were accustomed to self-rule and were wary of the perceived infringement on their freedoms. The weaver's outburst and the hushed conversations among the other men are indicative of the deep-seated unease and dissatisfaction with Andros' rule. The governor's attempts to impose English customs and taxes on the colonists only served to fuel the growing resentment. Despite the mounting opposition, Andros pressed on, believing that he was acting in the best interests of the king and the colonies. However, his tenure as governor was short-lived. In 1689, following the Glorious Revolution in England, Andros was ousted from power and replaced by a new government more sympathetic to the colonists' desires for self-rule.
