EDITORS COMMENTS
General Robert Nivelle, dated 1917: A Portrait of Determination and Ambition during the First World War This striking portrait of General Robert Nivelle, dated 1917, captures the intensity and resolve of a man at the height of his military career. Taken by renowned French photographer Jean Coraboeuf, the image offers a glimpse into the life of one of the most controversial figures of the First World War. Born on October 15, 1873, in Tours, France, Nivelle rose through the ranks of the French military to become a respected and decorated officer. By 1914, he had earned the rank of brigadier general and was assigned to the 71st Infantry Regiment. During the early years of the war, Nivelle distinguished himself in several battles, including the Battle of Artois and the Battle of Verdun. In 1916, Nivelle was appointed as the commander of the French Sixth Army, and it was during this time that he developed a controversial strategy for breaking the stalemate on the Western Front. Known as the Nivelle Offensive, this plan called for a massive artillery barrage followed by infantry attacks, with the goal of pushing the German lines back several miles. The offensive, which began on April 16, 1917, was a disaster, resulting in heavy losses for the French and little ground gained. Despite the failure of the Nivelle Offensive, Nivelle remained a prominent figure in the French military. He was eventually replaced as commander of the Sixth Army, but he continued to serve in various roles until the end of the war. This portrait, taken in 1917, captures the determination and ambition of a man who would leave a lasting impact on the history of the First World War.
