EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Eurasian baneberry, also known as herb Christopher or Actaea spicata. The image is based on a botanical illustration by Edouard Maubert, created for the comprehensive medical botanical work "La Regne Vegetal: Flore Medicale" published between 1864 and 1871 by Pierre Oscar Reveil, A. Dupuis, Fr. Gerard, and Francois Herincqs. The Eurasian baneberry is a toxic plant, with all parts of the plant being poisonous, particularly the berries. The plant is native to Europe, Asia, and North America, and it can be identified by its white or pinkish flowers, which bloom in late spring, and its red or blue-black berries that ripen in late summer. The plant's toxicity is due to the presence of actein, a glycoside that can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms if ingested. Despite its toxicity, the Eurasian baneberry has a long history of medicinal use. It was used traditionally in Europe and North America to treat various ailments, including diarrhea, dysentery, and rheumatism. The plant was also used externally to treat skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. However, the use of the plant for medicinal purposes should only be attempted under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional, due to its toxicity. The intricately detailed handcoloured steel engraving captures the beauty and complexity of the Eurasian baneberry, showcasing its unique features and making it an essential addition to any botanical collection.
