EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sissi, in the prime of her youth and beauty. Born as Elisabeth of Bavaria in 1837, she was the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Queen of Hungary. The image showcases Elisabeth's distinctive hairstyle, with her long, plaited hair cascading down her back in intricate braids. The plaits were a popular hairstyle among European royal women of the time, and Elisabeth's elegant and sophisticated appearance perfectly embodies the fashionable trends of the 19th century. Elisabeth was known for her independent spirit and unconventional behavior for a royal woman of her time. She was an accomplished horsewoman, an excellent musician, and a passionate traveler. Her love for nature and the outdoors led her to spend much of her time away from the imperial court, seeking solace in the mountains and the countryside. Despite her unconventional ways, Elisabeth remained deeply devoted to her husband and her duties as empress and queen. She was a beloved figure among the people of Austria and Hungary, and her death in 1898 was mourned throughout Europe. This photograph is a testament to her beauty, grace, and the enduring allure of the European royalty of the 19th century.
