EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts three highly poisonous mushrooms: the Death cap (Amanita phalloides), the Fools mushroom (Amanita verna), and the Death cap mushroom, also known as the Philadelphia Fool's Mushroom (Amanita phalloides var. phalloides). The image, created by A. Bessin and published in Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide, Atlas des Champignons, in 1910, is a testament to the intricate beauty and deadly allure of these fungi. The Death cap mushroom, with its distinctive bell-shaped cap and phallic stem, is one of the most infamous poisonous mushrooms in the world. Its white, waxy cap and volva, or sheath at the base of the stem, are shown in exquisite detail in this print. The Fools mushroom, on the other hand, is a deceitful lookalike of the edible Panther cap (Amanita pantherina), with its similar brown cap and white veil. However, the Fools mushroom's volva is distinctively red, as depicted in the illustration. Both the Death cap and Fools mushrooms contain the deadly toxins amatoxin and phallotoxin, which can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms, liver damage, and even death if ingested. Mycophiles, or mushroom enthusiasts, must exercise extreme caution when foraging for wild mushrooms, as these deadly lookalikes can easily be mistaken for edible species. This beautiful and informative chromolithograph serves as a reminder of the importance of proper identification and respect for the natural world, especially when it comes to the potentially deadly world of mushrooms.
