Common Toadflax: Linaris vulgaris, also known as Stevensia buxifolia or Linaire pelore, is a herbaceous plant belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family. This beautiful handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving is a testament to the exquisite botanical illustration techniques of the 19th century. The illustration was created by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), under the direction of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu for his "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali" or "Dictionary of Natural Science," published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The Common Toadflax is native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. Its common name derives from the resemblance of its flowers to those of the toadflax, a poisonous plant. However, the Common Toadflax is edible and was historically used for medicinal purposes. Its leaves, which are depicted in the illustration with their characteristic toothed edges, were used to make a tea to treat various ailments, including respiratory issues and digestive problems. The plant's flowers, which bloom in late spring and early summer, are tubular and two-lipped, with a distinctive purple-spotted red color. The fruit is a capsule that splits open to release seeds.
