EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Collared Inca, Coeligena torquata, also known as Bourcier's Inca or the Torquatus Inca. The Collared Inca is a stunning hummingbird species native to the Andes Mountains in South America. The bird is named for the distinctive white collar that encircles its neck, which contrasts sharply with its glossy green back and chest. This engraving is taken from W.C.L. Martin's "A General History of Humming-birds or the Trochilidae," published in London by John Gould in 1852. The work is considered a seminal contribution to the field of ornithology and features meticulously detailed illustrations of over 400 hummingbird species. The Collared Inca was one of the many species that Martin and his team meticulously documented, capturing its beauty and intricacies for future generations to appreciate. The Collared Inca is a small hummingbird, measuring only about 3 inches in length. It is found in the high-altitude cloud forests of the Andes, where it feeds on nectar from a variety of flowers using its long, curved beak. The Collared Inca is also known for its distinctive courtship display, during which the male performs a series of acrobatic maneuvers, hovering in mid-air and flashing its brilliant green and iridescent purple feathers. This engraving is a testament to the skill and artistry of the 19th-century natural history illustrators, who used a combination of hand-coloring and steel engraving techniques to create stunningly detailed and accurate representations of the natural world. Today, the Collared Inca remains a beloved and iconic species, inspiring awe and wonder in those who are fortunate enough to encounter it in its natural habitat.
