EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases a fascinating assemblage of natural wonders from the animal and fungi kingdoms. At the center of the image lies the Bamboo Fungus, Phallus indusiatus, its intricately detailed cap and stem depicted in lifelike detail. Surrounding the fungus are two species of scarab dung beetles, Coprophanaeus ensifer and Diabroctis mimas. The former, with its distinctive metallic green exoskeleton and powerful mandibles, is shown in the act of rolling a dung ball, while the latter, with its striped body and elongated antennae, rests nearby. In the background, a common wombat, Vombatus ursinus, forages among the vegetation, its stocky body and powerful claws adding a sense of scale to the scene. The illustration also includes the names of the various species in both Latin and French, as well as the scientific names of the fungus, Phallus phanee, and the scarab beetles, Phascolome ensifer and Phascolome mimas. This stunning work of art not only showcases the beauty and diversity of the natural world but also serves as a testament to the skill and artistry of the illustrators and engravers of the 19th century.
