Mona Lisa Returns with a Surprise: A 20th Century Twist on a Historical Masterpiece The enigmatic Mona Lisa, one of the most famous and iconic works of art in history, has graced the walls of the Louvre Museum in Paris since the late 1500s. However, in the early 20th century, this priceless masterpiece by Leonardo da Vinci was temporarily absent from its home due to a series of high-profile incidents. First, in 1911, the painting was stolen from the museum by an Italian handyman named Vincenzo Peruggia, who believed the Mona Lisa rightfully belonged in Italy. Peruggia managed to hide the painting in his apartment for over two years before it was discovered in Florence. The painting was eventually returned to the Louvre in 1913. In 1956, the painting was the target of another infamous incident when a man named Albert Duhamel, armed with a revolver, threw a rock at the painting, causing minor damage.
