EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Marie-Francois-Sadi Carnot, a prominent French politician and statesman, during a ceremonial event in 1889. Dressed in a formal red sash and adorned with a large white collar, Carnot exudes an air of authority and sophistication. The year was significant for Carnot, as he had been elected as the President of the French Republic just a few months prior, in January 1889. The image was taken during the Exposition Universelle (Universal Exhibition) of 1889, a world's fair held in Paris to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. The fair attracted millions of visitors from around the world and showcased the latest technological and industrial innovations. Carnot's presence at the event underscores his role as a key figure in French politics during this period. A brilliant mathematician and engineer, Carnot had previously served as the Minister of Education and Minister of War before being elected President. His tenure was marked by a focus on modernizing the French economy and strengthening the country's international standing. Despite his accomplishments, Carnot's presidency was short-lived. On June 24, 1894, he was assassinated during a public reception in Lyon. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a man who dedicated his life to serving his country and leaving a lasting impact on its history.
