The Indian Mutiny, also known as the Sepoy Mutiny or the First War of Indian Independence, began in May 1857 when sepoys (Indian soldiers) in the British East India Company's army rebelled against their British officers. The rebellion quickly spread, leading to widespread violence and chaos throughout northern India. Cawnpore, then a major military garrison town, was a significant battleground during the mutiny. The Memorial Well bears witness to one of the most tragic episodes of the conflict. In September 1857, during the Siege of Cawnpore, British women and children, along with some Indian allies, sought refuge in the Bibighar Kothi (Big House) compound.
