EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary Tudor, the Catholic Queen of England, is depicted in this exquisite Tudor-era miniature painting, created around 1558. Mary, born in 1516, was the only daughter of King Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Raised as a devout Catholic, Mary's reign marked a return to the old religion after the Protestant interlude under her brother, Edward VI. In this circular miniature, Mary is shown wearing a richly decorated brocade gown, adorned with intricate gold and silver thread embroidery. Her elaborate head dress, topped with a jeweled crucifix, further underscores her deep religious devotion. A pearl necklace and a collar of pearls and precious stones complete her regal attire. Mary's expression is serene and regal, her eyes gazing steadily out at the viewer. Her left hand holds a rosary, a symbol of her unwavering faith, while her right hand rests on a scepter, signifying her royal authority. The background is simple, with a plain gold ground, allowing the queen's striking features and elaborate costume to take center stage. This miniature painting is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the Tudor court, as well as the deep religious convictions of its monarch. Mary Tudor's reign was marked by religious tolerance, and she is remembered as the "Queen of the Rosary" for her efforts to promote Catholicism in England. This beautiful miniature provides a glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the life and reign of a monarch who played a pivotal role in English history.
