This evocative portrait captures Mary Stuart, Princess Royal and Princess of Orange (1631-1660), the eldest daughter of King Charles I of Britain and Henrietta Maria of France. The painting, created around 1660, showcases Mary in her regal splendor, dressed in the rich robes of the House of Orange. Her chestnut ringlets cascade down her shoulders, framing her delicate features and adding a youthful charm to her regal appearance. Mary's marriage to the future Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic, Prince Frederick Henry of Orange, was a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening the relationship between England and the Dutch Republic against the common enemy, the Spanish. The union was sealed in 1641, when Mary was just ten years old, and her husband was twenty-seven. The Dutch artist, unknown to us today, masterfully captured Mary's expressive gaze and the intricate detail of her elaborate headdress, adorned with pearls and feathers. The backdrop of a tranquil landscape, with a dyke and a mill in the distance, adds a sense of serenity and calm to the image. Mary's life was marked by tragedy and loss. Her mother died when she was only five, and her father was executed during the English Civil War in 1649. Mary and her family were forced to flee to the Dutch Republic, where she lived out the rest of her life as a respected and beloved figure. This portrait is a testament to Mary's resilience and the enduring legacy of the House of Stuart and Orange.
