In this striking photograph, two of Japan's most prominent political figures of the early 20th century are depicted in formal attire, showcasing their high ranks and prestigious honors. Marquis Ito Hirobumi, a former Prime Minister of Japan, stands on the left side of the image. Born in 1840, Ito played a pivotal role in modernizing Japan and establishing its constitutional monarchy. He served as Prime Minister from 1885 to 1888 and later became the Governor-General of Korea from 1895 until his assassination in 1909. On the right side of the photograph is Prince Katsura Taro, who was the current Prime Minister of Japan at the time this image was taken, around 1901. Born in 1848, Katsura served as Prime Minister from 1898 to 1901. He was also a decorated military officer and held the rank of Marshal General in the Imperial Japanese Army. Both men are dressed in their formal uniforms, adorned with numerous medals and decorations, reflecting their high-ranking positions and the honors they had received throughout their careers. The image captures the essence of the power and prestige held by these two influential figures in Japanese politics during this period. The photograph serves as a testament to the political landscape of Japan during the late Meiji Era, a time of significant change and modernization in the country's history.
