EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic and intriguing figure of Marie Louise de la Ramee, better known by her pen name Ouida. Born on February 2, 1839, in London, England, Ouida was a prolific and controversial English novelist who lived during the late Victorian era. Her pseudonym, derived from the French word for "honey," was a fitting choice for an author whose works were both sweet and provocative. The photograph, taken in 1908, captures Ouida in her later years, with her piercing gaze and expressive features. Her dark, curly hair is pulled back into a chignon, and she wears a high-collared blouse and a heavy necklace. The background is simple, with a plain wall and a single window letting in soft natural light. Despite her French name and aristocratic appearance, Ouida was actually of English descent. She grew up in poverty and was largely self-educated, but her natural talent for storytelling soon became apparent. Her first novel, "Anne Gilchrist," was published in 1859 when she was just 20 years old. Over the next few decades, she wrote over 50 novels, many of which dealt with controversial subjects such as incest, sadism, and sexuality. Ouida's works were both praised and condemned for their explicit content and their exploration of taboo themes. She was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle and counted among her friends some of the most famous artists and writers of the time, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Algernon Swinburne. Despite her success and her influence on Victorian literature, Ouida's personal life was marked by tragedy and scandal. She was married twice, both marriages ending in divorce, and she was known for her tempestuous relationships and her extravagant lifestyle. She died on March 24, 1908, at the age of 69, leaving behind a legacy of provocative and thought-provoking novels that continue to be read and studied today.
