EDITORS COMMENTS
"Marie Amélie of Bourbon, born on October 26, 1782, was the wife of Louis Philippe, King of the French from 1830 to 1848. Marie Amélie was the eldest daughter of Charles, Duke of Berry, and his wife, Marie-Antoinette of Austria. Her birth took place in the Palace of Fontainebleau, France. Marie Amélie was known for her beauty, intelligence, and grace. She was educated in the convent of the Visitation de Longchamp and later in the convent of the Petit-Val-de-Grâce. Her marriage to Louis Philippe on May 2, 1809, was a love match, and they had ten children together. During the reign of her husband, Marie Amélie was an influential figure at the French court. She was known for her charitable works, particularly her support for the poor and the sick. She also played a role in the education of her children, who were known for their intellectual and artistic achievements. Marie Amélie's life was marked by tragedy. Her eldest son, the Duke of Orléans, was exiled during the July Revolution of 1830, and her second son, the Duke of Montpensier, died in a hunting accident in 1847. Her husband, Louis Philippe, was overthrown in the Revolution of 1848, and the family went into exile. Marie Amélie died on April 24, 1866, in Claremont, Surrey, England. She is buried in the Royal Crypt of the Basilica of Saint-Denis, near Paris. Her legacy as a devoted wife, mother, and philanthropist continues to be remembered in French history." This print captures Marie Amélie in her later years, with a serene expression and a regal bearing that reflects her status as a queen consort. The image serves as a reminder of her significant role in French history and her enduring legacy as a devoted wife and mother.
