This striking image captures a pivotal moment in the tumultuous history of the Protestant Reformation, featuring the renowned religious leader Martin Luther and his devoted follower Hans Kohlhase. The photograph, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, dates back to 1546. Martin Luther, a German professor of theology, is best known for his role in the Protestant Reformation, which began in 1517 with his publication of the Ninety-Five Theses. Luther's theological ideas, which challenged the Catholic Church's authority and advocated for salvation through faith alone, sparked a religious and political upheaval that would forever change Europe. In this scene, Luther is depicted in the company of Hans Kohlhase, a leader of the Peasants' War, a rebellion that erupted in 1524 and lasted for several years. The peasants sought to improve their social and economic conditions, and they saw Luther as an ally in their struggle against the nobility and the Catholic Church. However, Luther's support for the peasants was limited, and he ultimately denounced their violence and called for peace and obedience to the authorities. Despite this, Kohlhase and other peasant leaders continued to see Luther as a symbol of their cause. In 1546, Kohlhase and his followers marched on the city of Jena, where Luther was residing, in the hope of securing his support. This photograph captures the moment when Luther, dressed in a simple robe and holding a book, confronts Kohlhase and his men. The expression on Luther's face conveys a sense of caution and resolve, as he tries to defuse the situation and prevent further bloodshed.
