This engraving depicts Alvaro de Luna y Tovar (1390-1453), a prominent Spanish politician and military leader of the late Middle Ages. Born in the Kingdom of Castile, Luna rose to prominence under King Juan II of Castile, serving as his trusted advisor and eventually becoming the Constable of Castile in 1430. Luna's image is captured in this vertical, upright print, which showcases his regal bearing and imposing presence. He is depicted wearing full armor, a symbol of his military prowess and status as a knight. The intricate details of the armor, from the embossed patterns to the meticulously rendered rivets, highlight the artistry of the engraving. The basin-shaped background, or breadplate, adds a chivalric touch to the portrait, evoking the knightly orders of the time, such as the Order of Santiago.
