London finance district at the start of World War I

Financiers took a very grave view of the European situation in July 1914, and the dislocation of normal conditions was felt at once in the banking and stockbroking quarters of the City. The European crisis plunged the stock and share market into the deepest gloom, and forced liquidation was everywhere apparent. Many stockbroking firms failed on 29th and 30th July 1914, and business was practically suspended, not only in London, but almost every financial centre throughout the world. Date: 1914

The crisis in Europe cast a deep shadow over the City's banking and stockbroking quarters, plunging the stock and share market into a state of profound gloom. The image depicts the somber atmosphere as men in hats, including the distinctive boater hat, gather outside a financial institution, likely awaiting news or seeking guidance amidst the uncertainty. The European crisis forced numerous liquidations, leading to the failure of many stockbroking firms on the 29th and 30th of July 1914. Business came to a virtual standstill not only in London but in financial centers around the world. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact of the European conflict on the British financial landscape during the early days of World War I.
