This poignant image captures the moment of departure for a young Leningrad evacuee on the shores of Lake Ladoga during the Siege of Leningrad in 1942. The Eastern Front of World War II had reached the outskirts of Leningrad, and the city was under a brutal siege by the German army. With food and supplies running low, the evacuation of civilians became a priority. The child in the photograph, bundled up against the cold, stands on the edge of a rickety boat, looking back at the city that was once home. The expression on his face is a mix of fear, uncertainty, and sadness. Behind him, the city of Leningrad is shrouded in smoke and darkness, a testament to the devastation wrought by the war. Lake Ladoga, the largest lake in Europe, became a vital lifeline for the city during the siege. The lake was used to transport food, medicine, and other essential supplies to the besieged population.
