This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Clarence Lawson Wood (1878-1957), a renowned illustrator and comic artist, in his military uniform during his service with the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) in World War One. Born in London in 1878, Wood's artistic talent was evident from an early age, and he went on to become a prolific and successful illustrator, contributing to numerous publications and creating popular comic strips. However, with the outbreak of war in 1914, Wood felt compelled to contribute to the war effort. He joined the RFC and was trained as a balloonist, a role that required a unique combination of artistic skill and technical expertise. Balloonists were responsible for observing enemy movements from the air and relaying critical intelligence back to their commanders on the ground. Wood's artistic abilities proved invaluable in creating detailed sketches of the terrain and enemy positions, which were then used to plan strategic attacks.
