EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the Antoinette monoplane, designed by the renowned French engineer Leon Levavasseur, which became the mount of English aviator Hubert Latham's daring attempts to fly across the English Channel in July 1909. Latham's ambition to accomplish this historic feat marked a significant milestone in aviation history, as the Channel represented the first major obstacle for early aviators seeking to prove the viability of powered flight for long-distance transportation. The Antoinette monoplane, with its sleek and elegant design, was a testament to the engineering prowess of the time. However, despite Latham's determination and the plane's impressive capabilities, fate had other plans. On both occasions, Latham was forced to abandon his attempts due to engine failure, resulting in dramatic ditchings in the English Channel. The first attempt took place on July 7, 1909, when Latham took off from Boulogne-sur-Mer in France, but was forced to land in the sea just 15 minutes later due to engine trouble. Undeterred, he made another attempt on July 13, launching from Dover, England, only to face the same fate as his previous attempt. Despite the setbacks, Latham's attempts to fly the English Channel served to further fuel the public's fascination with aviation and the seemingly impossible feats that could be achieved through human ingenuity and determination. The Antoinette monoplane, with its iconic place in aviation history, continues to inspire awe and admiration as a testament to the early pioneers of flight.
