Lady Idina Gordon going big-game shooting

Lady Idina Gordon (nee Sackville), who married her second husband, Captain Charles Gordon, in 1919, pictured in The Tatler with news that she was about to travel to British East Africa (Kenya) where her husband owned a house, for a big-game shoot. Idina would eventually make her permanent home in Kenya, where she was a leader of the notorious Happy Valley set. Five-times married Idina permanently moved to Kenya in 1924 with her third husband, Josslyn Hay, Earl of Errol. With her serial marriages and reputation for debauched decadence, she inspired the character of The Bolter in Nancy Mitfords novels, The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, Evelyn Waughs Vile Bodies and the character Iris Storm in The Green Hat by Michael Arlen.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Lady Idina Gordon, formerly known as Lady Sackville, poses confidently with her hunting rifle in this 1921 photograph from The Tatler. The caption announces her upcoming journey to British East Africa (now Kenya) to join her husband, Captain Charles Gordon, for a big-game shooting expedition. This would be just one of Lady Idina's many adventures in Africa. Born into English aristocracy, Lady Idina's scandalous personal life would make headlines for decades. She would go on to marry a total of five times, earning her the infamous title of 'The Bolter' in the annals of British high society. Her serial marriages and notorious reputation for debauched decadence would inspire the characters of Nancy Mitford's novels, The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, and Michael Arlen's The Green Hat. Lady Idina's move to Kenya with her third husband, Josslyn Hay, Earl of Errol, in 1924 marked a permanent shift in her life. She became a central figure in the notorious Happy Valley set, a group of expatriates known for their wild parties, scandalous behavior, and disregard for British colonial norms. This photograph captures a moment of excitement and anticipation as Lady Idina embarks on another adventure in her colorful and unconventional life.
