EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Kira Kirillovna of Russia (1907-1967) is seen sitting next to her husband, Louis Ferdinand of Prussia (1907-1951), at their residence in Doorn in the Netherlands in 1937. Kira, the daughter of Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Grand Prince Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia, married Louis Ferdinand, the second son of the Crown Prince of Prussia and grandson of Kaiser Wilhelm II, in a lavish ceremony held in the same year. The table before them is adorned with an eclectic assortment of photographs, each one holding a piece of the complex web of European royal history. Among them, a striking image of Kaiser Wilhelm II's first wife, Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria (1858-1921), catches the eye. Auguste Viktoria, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, was the Kaiser's first and most beloved wife. Their marriage, which produced seven children, ended in 1901 following Auguste Viktoria's affair with Prince Philip of Eulenberg. The presence of this photograph on the table may symbolize the intricate connections and familial ties that bound the European royal families together, despite the political and personal upheavals that marked the early 20th century. The image offers a glimpse into the private world of Kira and Louis Ferdinand, as they reflect on the rich and complex history that united them. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complexities and intricacies of European royal history, as well as the enduring bonds that transcended political and personal boundaries. The image, which is part of the Mary Evans Prints Online collection, offers a glimpse into the past and invites us to explore the fascinating stories that lie beneath the surface.
