EDITORS COMMENTS
King William II, also known as William Rufus or William the Red, was the eldest son of King William the Conqueror and Queen Matilda of Flanders. Born around 1056, he became King of England in 1087 upon his father's death. This striking print depicts King William II in regal attire, with a serious expression and a well-groomed beard. He is shown wearing a long tunic, a mantle draped over his shoulders, and a crown adorned with precious stones. William Rufus was known for his red hair, which earned him his nickname. He was a capable and energetic ruler, who took an active interest in the administration of his kingdom. He was also a skilled hunter and a patron of the arts. During his reign, William II faced several challenges to his authority. He was involved in a power struggle with his younger brother, Henry, who later became King Henry I. He was also accused of being involved in the mysterious death of his brother, King Richard I, who was found dead in the New Forest in 1089. Despite these challenges, William II managed to maintain control of his kingdom and strengthen its defenses against external threats. This print offers a glimpse into the image of King William II as it was perceived during his time. It underscores his regal presence and the power and authority he wielded as the monarch of England. The intricate details of his clothing and the solemnity of his expression add to the historical significance of the image, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical prints or art.
