Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1741, Joseph II ascended to the throne in 1765 following the death of his mother, Empress Maria Theresa. Known for his ambitious reforms, Joseph II aimed to modernize the Holy Roman Empire and bring it into the modern age. He sought to centralize power, reduce the influence of the Church, and promote religious tolerance. Joseph II's reign was marked by significant achievements, including the abolition of torture, the reform of the justice system, and the establishment of a uniform system of taxation. However, his reforms were met with resistance from various quarters, including the Church and the nobility. Despite the challenges, Joseph II remained committed to his vision for a more enlightened and progressive empire. His reign came to an end in 1790, when he died unexpectedly at the age of 49.
