EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing caricature captures the moment of mockery directed towards John Hewson, a humble shoemaker who defied the odds to rise through the ranks of Cromwell's New Model Army and become a general, only to be labeled a regicide and forced into exile following the Restoration in 1662. John Hewson's remarkable journey began during the English Civil War when he joined the New Model Army as a common soldier. His exceptional leadership skills and military acumen soon came to the attention of Oliver Cromwell, who promoted him to the rank of general in 1650. Hewson played a crucial role in several key battles, including the Second Battle of Newbury and the Battle of Worcester. However, Hewson's fortunes took a turn for the worse following the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660. He was branded a regicide, or a supporter of the execution of King Charles I, and was forced to flee the country. He spent the remainder of his days in exile, living out his days in obscurity. This satirical print, likely created in the years following Hewson's death in 1662, captures the amusement and disbelief of the public towards Hewson's unlikely rise and fall from grace. The image of a shoemaker, a symbol of humble beginnings, transformed into a military commander, only to be mocked and ridiculed, is a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of history and the capriciousness of fate. Despite the mockery and derision, John Hewson's story remains an intriguing chapter in the annals of English history, a testament to the indomitable human spirit and the power of determination in the face of adversity.
