This evocative photograph captures the moment when Irish Nationalist politician John Dillon, born in 1851, was visited in prison by his colleague and fellow activist Charles Stewart Parnell in 1881. The image, taken in the Van, a notorious Dublin jail, shows Dillon sitting at a small table by the window, his pockets turned out for inspection by the gaoler.
