Born on February 9, 1840, in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway, Svendsen was a prolific and influential figure in Norwegian music. He studied violin and composition in Leipzig, Germany, before returning to Norway to become the leader of the Christiania Theatre Orchestra. Svendsen's compositions spanned various genres, including symphonies, operas, chamber music, and songs. His most famous works include the violin concerto "The Beauty of the Forest" and the symphonic poem "In the Hall of the Mountain King."
