This evocative image captures the final moments of Joan of Arc, the legendary heroine and warrior maiden of France, before her execution on May 30, 1431, in Rouen, Normandy. In the photograph, Joan is seen kneeling before a crucifix, her eyes closed in deep devotion as she presses her lips to the sacred symbol of Christianity. Born in Domrémy, Lorraine, in eastern France, Joan of Arc (1412-1431) rose to prominence during the Hundred Years' War between France and England. Her military successes earned her the moniker 'The Maid of Orléans.' However, her triumphs were short-lived.
