This tapestry, created in the 15th century, depicts a pivotal moment in the legend of Joan of Arc (1412-1431), the heroic French warrior and visionary. In the image, Joan, dressed in full armor and mounted on horseback, is greeted by King Charles VII of France (1403-1461) at the Castle of Chinon in 1429. The Hundred Years War (1337-1453), a long-standing conflict between France and England, had reached a critical juncture, and Joan, a humble peasant girl from the Lorraine region, was sent by divine inspiration to aid the French forces. The tapestry vividly portrays the scene of Joan's arrival, with a group of soldiers and companions in the background, a bridge and castle in the distance, and a Roman Catholic saint and animals in the margins. Joan's horse, its head held high, mirrors the regal bearing of the king's horse, as the two powerful figures approach each other.
