EDITORS COMMENTS
Jeanne de Montfort, Dame de Bretagne (Lady of Brittany), stands resolutely before her fortified chateau, defying the advancing French forces in this evocative 15th century print. Dating back to the tumultuous year of 1342, Jeanne, an ardent ally of the English, bravely holds her ground against the encroaching French army during the ongoing Hundred Years War. The historical backdrop of this scene is rich with intrigue and conflict. The Hundred Years War, which spanned from 1337 to 1453, was a series of battles over succession to the French throne between the House of Plantagenet (representing the English monarchy) and the House of Valois (representing the French monarchy). Brittany, a strategic region located in the northwest of France, was a crucial battleground due to its proximity to both England and France. Jeanne de Montfort, a formidable figure in her own right, was the daughter of Duke John III of Brittany and Isabella of Aragon. She married Enguerrand VII, Count of Nevers, in 1337, which made her a valuable ally to the English. When her husband died in 1344, Jeanne became regent for her son, John II, and continued to support the English cause. In this print, Jeanne de Montfort is depicted in her full regal splendor, clad in a flowing gown and crowned with a diadem. Her determined expression and raised sword convey her unwavering commitment to defend her lands and her alliance with England against the French threat. The imposing chateau, with its high walls and towering battlements, serves as a symbol of her strength and resilience in the face of adversity. This print offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of medieval history, showcasing the courage and determination of Jeanne de Montfort, Dame de Bretagne, as she defends her chateau against the advancing French forces in 1342.
