EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts James Bruce, the intrepid Scottish explorer who defied the odds and became the first European to set foot in the ancient city of Lalibela, Ethiopia, in 1770. Born in Kinnaird, Scotland, in 1730, Bruce was a man of insatiable curiosity and unyielding determination. He spent his formative years in the British Army before embarking on a self-directed journey to Africa in 1768. Bruce's exploration of Africa was driven by his fascination with the biblical accounts of the Queen of Sheba and the legendary kingdom of Prester John. He believed that the source of the Nile River, long thought to be a myth, could be found in Ethiopia. After years of travel, hardships, and near-death experiences, Bruce finally arrived at Lalibela in 1770. He was greeted with awe by the locals, who had never seen a European before. Bruce's account of his journey, "Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile," was published in 1790 and became an instant sensation in Europe. The book provided the first accurate information about Ethiopia and its people, as well as shedding light on the geography and culture of the African continent. Bruce's explorations paved the way for future European expeditions to Africa and expanded the world's knowledge of the continent. This print, created in the late 18th or early 19th century, captures the essence of Bruce's legendary journey. The explorer is depicted in his explorer's attire, a map of Africa in hand, and a determined look in his eyes. The backdrop of the print features a map of Ethiopia and the Nile River, highlighting the significance of Bruce's discovery. This print is a testament to the indomitable spirit of James Bruce, a man who dared to explore the unknown and changed the course of history.
